Comparisons with Aegidius Sadeler’s engraving
What is the Domitian’s connection with Sadeler’s engraving? The Domitian’s composition is the same as the engraving, but details and proportions differ between them, and the baton has a different slope, as one can see in the overlay image below. The proportions of the other Domitians (vers. 1) are much closer in resemblace to the engraving, see examples below. Details in the engraving such as the decoration on the cuirass are not found on the Domitian, but they are found on the other Domitians (vers. 1) from the 16th and 17th centuries, see examples below. The Domitian has details that are not found on the engraving such as the collar chain with the symbols (later overpainting, age unclear), nor is it found on any of the other Domitians (vers. 1). The laurel wreath on Domitian’s head is not original, it was most likely painted in the 18th century.
